The contracting company, Mollenberg-Betz working at the DuPont plant in the Town of Tonawanda has an amazing track record. In over 100 years, they had no serious workplace accidents, until Tuesday, when an explosion at the Tonawanda DuPont plant injured William Freeburg and took the life of Richard Folaron. Freeburg is expected to make a full recovery. Officials on the scene did not know the cause of the explosion, and it is being investigated by OSHA and DuPont.
Both Folaron and Freeburg were welders with Mollenberg-Betz. At the time of the explosion, they were attaching a bracket onto a 10,000 metal storage tank. It is unknown at this time whether the tank had chemical residue left inside from it's previous use, or how the explosion occurred. Police, ambulance, and firefighters from the Town and City of Tonawanda flocked to the scene.
Grief counselors are on hand to talk to co-workers of Folaron. The company employs about 150 people in offices and outside contractors, and just about everyone knew Richard Folaron. He had worked for Mollenberg-Betz for 25 years.
