East Broadway Mall Accused of Stiffing Workers and Gouging Tenants

Posted on Feb 25, 2010

Demonstrators stood in front of East Broadway Mall, beneath the Manhattan Bridge, accusing its operators of labor law violations and rent gouging of commercial tenants.  They were there to support a press conference the militant Chinese Staff and Workers’ Association was having with the hopes of getting attention so that the government would investigate questionable practices at the mall.

The protest was against the bosses for multiple violations of the law including hefty rent increases which would kick out small businesses and also accusations that of inappropriate treatment of construction workers who were working on renovations without overtime or unemployment benefits when they were laid off.  One of the injured workers commented that he had received some workers’ compensation, but it was discontinued.
