Elevator Company Sued Over Fatal Death in New York

Posted on Jan 06, 2012

The elevator company that serviced the elevator responsible for the death of a Manhattan advertising employee has been sued this week as a result of another accident that occurred at New York’s Plaza hotel.
A Plaza housekeeper was hurt when the freight elevator she was riding in last year started to rapidly descend and ended with a violent stop. Cecillia Xirouhakis filed a complaint on December 27 in the New York State Supreme Court against Transel Elevator, Inc, the company that maintained and repaired the Plaza’s freight elevators. The housekeeper’s attorney said the injuries sustained were so serious, Xirouhakiis who is from New Jersey ended up with fractured bones in one of her feet due to the sudden and violent stop.
On December 14, the same company performed service work on an elevator located in a building at 285 Madison Avenue. It later malfunctioned and killed Suzanne Hart, a 41 year old employee working in the building. She stepped into the elevator from the lobby when the car shot upward and pinned her between the elevator and the wall. Investigation into that case is still pending.
As for the company, Transel Elevator has not returned calls regarding the lawsuit. They have denied other allegations filed against them from other injury cases in 2008. The company is said to be cooperating with the investigation into Hart’s death in December.
The company has not yet filed any answers to the most recent complaint.
