Managing Partner, Brian Mittman, blogged about it the other day -- what is going on in Erie County, NY? Why the new policy requiring disabled employees to pick up their workers compensation checks every two weeks rather than receiving them in the mail?
It appears the rationale is to get disabled employees back to work; while they might not be able to go back to their old job, the county wants to encourage them to look for a less strenuous job. It's been reported that this new progam designed to get employees back to work has been successful in getting some individuals back to work. But, is the policy fair for those that are truly disabled and not able to work, where getting out to get to the county office is a hardship in and of itself? Requring disabled employees to meet with supervisors when they pick up their checks might get some people back to work but are the truly disabled being penalized?
