A false workers’ compensation claim has landed a Catskills man in hot water. The man, John Caltabiano Jr., 42 is accused of trying to defraud the New York State Workers’ Compensation system out of $700,000.
As a result of a year-long investigation by the New York State Insurance Frauds Bureau and the Office of the Fraud Inspector General, Caltabiano was arrested and charged with several felonies. Charges include violations of the workers’ compensation law, fraudulent practices, first degree falsifying of a business record, first degree perjury, and third degree insurance fraud.
According to NY State police, Caltabiano suffered an eye injury in a factory accident. He then exaggerated the extent of his injuries in order to file a claim for workers’ compensation benefits. Caltabiano claimed that he was permanently and totally disabled in both eyes.
These false claims were made to the New York Workers’ Compensation Board, and could have cost the Board $700,000 in unnecessary benefits.
All of the charges against Caltabiano are felonies, which means he could face some very serious consequences. As a result, he was arraigned in the City of Hudson and remanded to the Columbia County Jail. This was in lieu of $25,000 bail and $40,000 bond.
