Farmworkers Bill Still Debated in Senate

The Senate is currently debating a bill that would give more rights to farmworkers including overtime pay and mandatory rest periods. If the bill passes, farmworkers would be entitled to one-and-a-half times their base pay after working more than 60 hours in a week or 10 hours in one day. They would also be entitled to one full day off each week. In addition, farmworkers would be required to pay for unemployment insurance and workers' compensation benefits.

"Right now, the farm worker doesn't have the right to join a union. Every other worker does," said Denis Hughes, president of the New York State AFL-CIO. "He or she should have the same rights as every other worker in New York."
