Fraud Discovered After On The Job Fatalities

Posted on May 05, 2011

Workers' compensation laws allow for the payment of benefits to workers who have been injured on the job. The same benefits are also paid to the families of workers killed on the job. When an accident occurs on the job site the result is often an investigation to determine what happened to cause the accident. Despite the fact that workers' compensation benefits are paid on qualified claims regardless of fault; criminal charges may result if the accident is the result of negligence or failure to meet safety regulations.

In some cases, an investigation into an accident in the workplace leads to the discovery of other criminal activities. In a recent article published by the Walls Street Journal, a New York man is on the receiving end of fraud charges from prosecutors. As stated in the article, "Bruce Greenberg pleaded not guilty to charges of grand larceny, falsifying business and tax fraud records in Staten Island".

According to prosecutors, Greenberg filed a false disability claim between 2004 and 2008. It was during this period when Greenberg received benefits that he also reported to work to the site where the fatal accident occurred. This information was discovery while investigators looked into a blaze which resulted in the death of two firefighters at the site where Greenberg worked as a supervisor. Prosecutors do not suspect Greenberg of any wrongdoing in relation to the fatalities.

Fraud can and does happen all across the country each day. When individuals commit workers' compensation fraud, everyone suffers the consequences. Business owners pay higher workers' compensation insurance premiums, workers' with legitimate claims are scrutinized and taxpayers often face a higher tax burden for tax funded programs. For this reason, each person must take workers' compensation fraud seriously and report any suspected fraudsters to prevent long term abuse of the system.
