The 9/11 Benefits Bill that fell in the House to procedure is causing an uproar, and unfortunately doesn't have as much to do with workers' compensation and disability for those brave workers and volunteers as one would think. Instead, we would like to focus on goats.
Susan Tansosch reportedly collected more than $60,000 in workers' compensation after being employed in the United States Postal Service before suffering a condition or disability that made her eligible for federal benefits. Unfortunately, she also was raising goats in Binghamton.
The concern wasn't that Ms. Tansosch was increasing her knowledge of animal husbandry, of course, but rather that federal investigators noted that the 53-year-old woman had never reported the new vocation.
Obtaining federal workers' compensation benefits is different from the process for New York state, and generally focus on on-site injuries rather than those for people commuting to and from a work site. It can be difficult for people who have been initially denied because the appeals review process for federal workers' compensation benefits relies on evidence already introduced in past hearings.
That's why it's important to keep records of any medical professionals you seek, and to be sure that you follow guidelines including the requirement to only use doctors and services where you were referred from your primary care physician.
Of course, it's also important to keep in mind that if a hobby pays, it can also be considered employment. Lack of knowledge about that fact may not constitute an effective defense, either.
