Workplace deaths have been shown to hold steady during 2010 after more than two years of declining numbers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics have accounted for 4,547 workplace fatalities last year. That number is very close to the 2009 statistic of 4,551.
Overall, workplace deaths have been declining since the 1990's but with the headline-drawing workplace deaths including the West Virginia coal miners explosion that killed 29 and the Deepwater Horizon oil rig disaster that took the lives of 11 rig workers. The one area of workplace deaths that have been on the rise involves police officers which went up to 134 officers from 96 officers in 2009.
The increase in workplace fatalities may be related to the number of hours people are working across the country, which has been on the rise. In the government poll, there were calculated to be 3.5 deaths per 100,000 full-time workers but there were significant differences in the rates within different industries. The fishing industry held the highest rate with 116 deaths for each group of 100,000 workers.
The final report is expected to be released soon. It is believed that the fatality numbers will be slightly higher when the final numbers are tallied but overall the fatalities rates among employees appears to remain mostly steady.
