Over nine years after the tragic attacks at the World Trade Center, many first responders are still struggling with debilitating – and expensive – health problems. Their doctors believe that the problems plaguing them were caused by the toxic dust and debris released when the twin towers fell.
A bill working its way through Congress would cover their medical bills for at least another eight years and compensate them for lost earnings. However, the bill – called the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act – is stalled. Many in Congress are worried how the bill will be funded.
However, those first responder and other emergency workers who risked their lives at the site of the World Trade Center collapse would be left without medical care and monitoring and wage replacement if the bill falters. This could happen if insurance companies and workers compensation funds refuse to cover their medical costs – a very real threat for many injured and debilitated workers.
The bill does not come cheap – it would provide $3.5 billion for medical monitoring and treatment (expected to last eight years), as well as $8.4 billion over 20 years to cover lost earnings. Sadly, the current economic conditions make lawmakers uneasy about any costly bill – even one that would take care of the most deserving among us.
