Westchester County has launched a program concerning what can be a serious issue: head injury prevention.
While the program focuses on the ten things you can do to prevent head injuries in children, the tips are useful for anyone, no matter what your age - a prime example would be construction workers who, in the summer heat, may not feel like completing every safety precaution.
For example, the helmet and hard hat combination is huge for reducing head injuries. Just like the Westchester County guidelines state for helmets specific to a sport, hard hats are key for construction workers who operate heavy equipment and materials. They share an important similarity in one other area, too. Hard hats and helmets need to be regularly checked for cracks and shavings from earlier incidents that could impact their ability to protect your head. If you haven't lately, consider giving it a look-over on your next water or lunch break.
And if something damaging happens, even from a small piece of wood or other minor injury, don't keep working. We know all too well that head injuries can show up hours or days after the initial incident. You need to get things checked out as soon as possible by a doctor, or the results can be devastating.
It's summer time so we understand that it can feel like extra work to try and make sure that you protect yourself, but it can also be worth it compared to the consequences.
