Less than two years after being appointed as chairman of the New York State workers’ compensation system Zachary S. Weiss is leaving to become a judge in the Social Security system.
Weiss was charged with the difficult task of implementing major changes to the much maligned NY workers’ comp system. According to Weiss and Governor Paterson’s office, Weiss is leaving voluntarily for a more secure and better paying job.
Despite making some necessary changes, such as lowering overall costs and giving workers more money, some important reform goals were not met and there is discontent with the pace of change.
One missing change is a much needed overhaul to the medical guidelines used to assess disabilities; another change not yet implemented is improvements in programs to get injured workers back to work faster.
No replacement for Weiss has yet been named. Gov. Paterson’s office is currently undergoing a search for a successor.
