Health Care Workers Receive Guidelines in Effort to Avoid Work Injury

Posted on May 25, 2010

Have you any idea how common it is for health care workers to be injured on the job?  Consider  all the back injuries incurred when lifting patients.  Health care providers often have workers missing days from work due to these injuries.  Believe it or not, it's been reported that almost 30% of businesses that receive notices from OSHA for high injury rates were nursing homes.

What is being done about this?  The University of Buffalo Campus in Amherst, NY will be providing training for health care workers in an effort to help them avoid being hurt on the job as they lift and maneuver patients.  The university is opening a Safe Patient Handling Lab and Training Center to educate managers and workers.  It is hoped that more facilities will follow suit.  This will benefit both the worker and the health care facilities.  Workers will remain healthy and on-the-job and facilities will save millions in workers' compensation costs and lost workdays.
