The rumors are not new. For many years, people have been discussing whether or not Social Security will still be a reality for future recipients. According to recent reports in the news, unless something is done- and soon, this national retirement program will be drained of funds by the year 2037. This announcement couldn't come at a worse time as the nation's economy continues to struggle through a recovery period.

Social Security Crisis

After decades of operating in the green, the Social Security program is facing a very dangerous period. According to a report from the Associated Press, "The massive retirement program has been feeling the effects of a struggling economy for several years. The program first went into deficit last year, but the CBO said at the time that Social Security would post surpluses for a few more years before permanently slipping into deficits in 2016." Unfortunately this may not be the case. With an entire generation of baby boomers set to retire, the Social Security program will end up paying out $45 billion more than it will collect in payroll taxes this year alone. As millions of workers begin collecting retirement benefits while at the same time not paying into the program, the future of our nations retirement program is looking bleak. If the government does not get on the ball and implement changes today, by 2037 the Social Security fund will run out. This may prove to be the ultimate challenge as the country already faces major financial worries due to the struggling economy. Only time will tell if retirement and disability benefits will be a reality for individuals who have in the past as well as those who continue to pay into the system.
