Illogical State Cuts Will Delay Social Security Benefits

Posted on Apr 14, 2009

The Nation's top Social Security Official, Michael J. Astrue, noted that the State's are going to hurt many individuals with disabilities due to unnecessary cuts!

"governors are hurting their own states, their own citizens, and increasing hte backlog of claims" by furloughing workers who make disability decisions.

The formula is simple. An individual who cannot continue to work due to a disability (or disabilities) can apply for Social Security Disability Benefits through the Social Security Administration. However, in order to process the cases, the initial step in determining whehter a person is eligible is actually handled by a State agency that makes this first decision. The Federal Government reimburses the States for the expense of this cost. So Furloughs and Layoffs will do nothing to save the State money!
