Ironworkers Die on a NY Construction Site: Thieves Steal Tools and Accident Investigation Kit

Posted on Mar 03, 2011

Suspiciously, just a few days after two ironworkers died in a NY construction accident in the Upper West Side on February 8th, thieves stole thousands of dollars worth of tools - and an accident investigation kit from the site.

The workers were installing metal beams inside an elevator shaft and due to the absence of certain safety equipment, plunged 65 feet to the ground when they fell on February 8th. The Department of Buildings is investigating the accident, and has issued 10 serious safety violations against F.J. Sciame Construction, the general contractor on the site. One of the violations was for not having safety netting in place, which may have stopped the workers' from falling 65 feet, while other safety violations included having a lack of toe boards designed to prevent slipping, a lack of guardrails, and failure to cover holes large enough for people and/or equipment to fall through.

Sometime between February 11th and February 14th, thieves stole more than $1200 in tools, computer equipment, snow boots, and the accident investigation kit. It is unknown from the information provided in the police report whether or not the contents of the stolen accident investigation kit included information regarding the city investigation of safety violations regarding this particular accident.

Investigators responded to the burglary call from workers on February 14th, and believe the thieves entered the site through the back where they discovered footprints in the snow. Detectives on the case are investigating to determine whether or not the burglary may be an inside job.

A hearing will be held on March 30th. If F.J. Sciame Construction is found guilty of the safety violations, they will face fines.
