Is your COPD getting bad? Maybe you need Social Security Disability

Posted on May 31, 2010

If you are suffering from COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) in New York and your symptoms are getting so bad that you cannot work, then it may be time for you to consider applying for Social Security Disability benefits.

COPD is a disease of the respiratory system that gets worse over time.  When initially diagnosed with COPD your symptoms may not be too bad, but over the course of your life they can worsen and leave you unable to work or enjoy life the way you used to.

If you suffer from COPD you may find that the coughing you experience as a result gets worse, as larger and larger amounts of mucus are created by your body.  You may find yourself debilitated by wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, and tightness in your chest.

When you become unable to work because of a chronic ailment like COPD, you can apply for Social Security Disability benefits.  Be warned, however: it can take a long time for your application for disability to be approved, and you may very well find your application rejected.

The majority of applications for SSD benefits are rejected at first.  If this happens to you, you have the option to appeal the decision, but again this will add time to your case.  Want to improve your chances of having a SSD benefits application approved the first time around?  Talk to a NY Social Security Disability attorney about your case.
