Long Island News - Senate Majority Committed to Protecting the Rights of At-Risk Families

Posted on Dec 10, 2009

As reported in the Long Island News yesterday, the New York State Senate began a series of hearings to explore the need for reform of the civil legal service system to ensure that we continue to protect families and core justice values especially during these tough economic times .  Senators heard tesimony from leaders of various legal, academic, business government and community groups as well as individuals who rely on the availability of civil legal service providers.

In addition to providing crucial assistance to New Yorkers at a time of need, civil legal services also provide the state economic benefits.  Some of the ways it saves local governments money include helping to keep families facing foreclosure in their homes and out of homeless shelters, helping unemployed workers receive insurance benefits they're entitled to and assisting disabled New Yorkers in receiving federal Social Security disability benefits, bringing more tax dollars back from washington and relieving the burden on state programs.  Click here to read complete Press Release.
