Metro-North Worker Awarded $2.6 Million From Manhattan Jury

Last week, the Poughkeepsie Journal reported a resident of Poughkeepsie was awarded $2.6 million by a Manhattan jury for injuries sustained while working for the Metro-North Railroad. The workplace accident occurred last year, resulting in nerve damage and other injuries for the Poughkeepsie man.

According to the report, the accident occurred on March 3, 2009 when Jeromie Anderson, 42 was performing maintenance work on tracks near Beacon. Anderson was injured after being shocked with 7,500 volts of electricity.

A trial jury has awarded Anderson $2,638,893 in damages, however North-Metro plans on appealing the verdict. The railroad has conceded negligence in the accident however they are disputing the extend of injuries suffered by Anderson. A lawyer for Mr. Anderson presented evidence during the trial that indicated the medical staff of Metro-North, "had permanently disqualified Anderson from working as a trackman and the railroad told him there were no other jobs available."

As reported in the Poughkeepsie Journal, Maurer expressed his "deep gratitude to the jurors in the case" and said "the verdict will help Jeromie Anderson to rebuild a life that was shattered by the accident." Ira Maurer is an attorney from Fishkill representing Anderson in this case.

A rail service used by suburban commuters, the Metro-North is managed by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. It runs service from New York City to northern suburbs in the state of New York and Connecticut. In the United States it holds the position of the second busiest commuter railroad in monthly ridership.
