New York docs defraud the workers’ comp, Medicare & Medicaid programs

Posted on Feb 22, 2011

Some New York doctors are in the news after being rounded up in a national hunt for fraudulent Medicaid and Medicare fraud.  Ten doctors from Brooklyn were found to have committed fraud, including defrauding the New York workers’ compensation system.

For example, a Park Slope neurologist, Dr. Leonard Langman, is accused of fraudulently billing Medicare and the New York workers’ comp program about $250,000 from 2006 to 2009.  Doctors typically defraud the workers’ comp system when they bill for more work than they actually did for an injured worker.  Some doctors will even bill for visits to the doctor that never happened.

In all federal authorities nabbed over 100 people who are accused of bilking Medicare and Medicaid out of over $200 million.  The most audacious scam involved seven people and three clinics billing for doctor visits, diagnostic tests and physical therapy tests that never happened.

In some cases, the doctors did not work alone.  There are “recruiters” who are believed to encourage Medicare, Medicaid or workers’ comp beneficiaries to go to certain doctors, doctors who will take advantage of them and use their information to bill for more services than they actually deliver.
