A fatal worksite accident took place at a recycling plant in Brentwood on March 29, 2011, when a worker was crushed to death during his shift. Augustin Colon, a Westbury resident, was at work at Emjay Environmental Recycling on Tuesday when he was fatally injured by a debris sorting conveyer. He was found underneath the machinery by coworkers at 4:30 p.m. He was 44 years old.
Although there aren't any known witnesses, it is assumed that Colon's arm was caught in the belt while he was working underneath the machinery, causing him to become entangled. Coworkers at the recycling plant say that they had last seen Colon at 1:10 p.m. Long Island officials were contacted by workers at the recycling plant just after Augustin Colon was found. Emergency workers removed Colon from the machinery, and he was pronounced dead at the scene shortly afterwards.
The facility and incident are being investigated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Islip Fire Marshal's office.
Markhoff & Mittman, P.C. would like to remind everyone to take precautions when working with any kind of heavy machinery. We offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the victim.
