NY mechanic accused of workers’ comp fraud

Posted on Aug 26, 2009

A North Bay auto mechanic has been accused of committing workers compensation fraud against the New York State Insurance Fund (NYSIF).  The mechanic, Ronald Snyder, 40, is accused of collecting wage replacement benefits from the NYSIF while he was gainfully employed.

Snyder claimed he was unable to work because of two accidents, one in 2003 and another in 2004, both which allegedly happened when he was employed by the New York State Thruway Authority.  However, surveillance showed Snyder working as a mechanic in Durhamville NY.

Since February 20, 2008 Snyder is accused of fraudulent collecting $24,570.  If he hadn’t been caught, the NYSIF stood to lose a total of $246,510.79 while paying benefits for Snyder.

According to investigators Snyder made 17 written statements attesting to his no-work status, and he was only caught because of the investigation launched by the NYSIF along with the New York State Insurance Department Frauds Bureau and the Workers' Compensation Board Inspector General's Office.

Snyder has been arrested for fraudulent workers comp practices and will face additional felony charges of insurance fraud and offering a false instrument for filing.
