NY Social Security Disability applicant waiting YEARS for benefits!

Posted on Apr 28, 2010

Have you been waiting for your New York Social Security Disability claim or appeal to be approved?  Have you been waiting for a while?  It is no secret that the SSA is trying to deal with a massive backlog of disability claims, but some applicants are having to wait far too long to get benefits that they so desperately need.

How do wait times get so long?  A little over 60 percent of SSD applicants are turned down initially, which means they have to file an appeal – which adds time to an already excruciating wait.  One Syracuse man has been waiting for over 500 days for his benefits to be approved, which sadly is not unusual.

According to the SSA, the average wait times for approval were, until recently, about 561 days in Syracuse, NY.  At the time the waits were measured, that was the 14th longest wait time of all hearing offices across the U.S.  Columbus Ohio won the top spot with an average wait time of an unbelievable 639 days.

Probably the best thing you can do to cut down on a potential wait is to get your initial application filled out accurately and completely.  An experienced New York Social Security disability attorney can help you with this.
