NY Workers’ Comp limits on physical therapy to take effect soon

Do you need physical therapy as part of your recovery program after an on-the-job injury in New York? Look out – limits on physical therapy treatments provided through your workers’ comp insurance plan are going into effect on December 1^st.

What does this mean for you? It means that there will be a cap on the total number of treatments that you’ll be compensated for under your workers’ comp insurance benefits. According to guidelines, you’ll be eligible for no more than 12 to 20 physical therapy treatments after an accident.

You can be eligible for more if a doctor recommends more treatments. However, your doctor will have to jump more hurdles to get you the physical therapy they believe you need. While this may save money for insurers and employers, it may make it challenging for injured workers to get the therapy they need.

The New York Workers’ Compensation Board believes the new physical therapy guidelines will improve how fast workers have access to medical care and also the quality of that care – in addition to reducing costs.

The types of injured expected to be affected by the new guidelines are back, neck, knee and shoulder injuries – the ones that typically respond best to physical therapy.
