NY workers: study claims that your job will influence how you die

Posted on Jul 31, 2010

If you work in one of the more dangerous New York professions like construction work or roof repair, you probably don’t need a study to tell you this: your job could affect how you die.

While few people want to sit around and consider how they are going to die, studies like this help management put the appropriate programs in place to help employees avoid falling prey to problems and diseases that are common in their professions.

This study took place in England, and was designed to show major differences between occupational groups and their risk of death from primarily drug and alcohol-related deaths.

These types of deaths are more likely to happen to:

  • Drug abuse deaths: painters, bricklayers, roofers
  • Alcohol-related deaths (like cirrhosis of the liver, cancer of the liver): merchant seamen, cooks and bar staff
  • HIV/AIDS related deaths: male tailors, dressmakers and hairdressers
  • Accidental poisoning deaths: male painters, decorators, bricklayers, plasterers and roofers

While this is a depressing topic, it really shows how much New York workers risk to do important and risky jobs.  If you should suffer from a workplace accident or injury, you really do deserve those workers’ compensation benefits.  You’ve already risked so much for your employer – make sure that if you’re hurt you get the compensation you need and deserve to get better.
