On The Job Injuries Common For Police Officers

Posted on May 12, 2011

Work related injuries are not uncommon for members of the police force. This comes as no surprise as this type of job is fraught with hazards. Working side by side with other first responders, police officers are subjected to a number of dangerous situations each and every day. As a result, the number of workers' compensation claims in this profession are not surprisingly, higher than that of other occupations.

A recent news report from NineMSN.com points out that police officers suffer from the same injuries, regardless of where they perform their jobs. Each day, across the globe, police offices respond to calls which often put their lives in danger. As stated by NineMSN.com, "Police Minister Neil Roberts released figures showing 2210 work-related incidents were reported by officers on their electronic system between July 1, 2010, and April 11, 2011.  Causes were grouped into 42 categories, with the leading one being those injuries received in a struggle to restrain a person, with 430 incidents."

It is not just danger from criminals that threaten police officer safety but also the very real stress associated with this type of job. In many cases the type of injury from work may not be related to actual "policing" but the pressures and stress that go hand-in-hand with this profession.

Fortunately police officers are highly trained to deal with these incidents, which reduces the number of accidents and injures that may otherwise occur. It is important to recognize that without this additional training, more accidents and injuries would likely occur. As it stands, police officers must face certain hazards and risks each day which in some cases will result in injury regardless of the safety training they have received.
