A rehab center in Ellentown has been cited for safety violations by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The center faces fines of up to $28,000. OSHA investigated the Renaissance Project inpatient facility after a fatal workplace incident last October. The facility is a 100-bed treatment center for drug and alcohol addiction.
As previously reported by The Associated Press, the incident took place during an altercation between Richard Giga, a resident of the center from New City in Rockland County, and Leland Young, a security guard. Young was fatally stabbed, and a nurse also sustained injuries when forced to help Giga flee. The incident ended in a door-to-door search and standoff with police.
The Westchester County-based organization currently has 15 days to either comply or contest OSHA's findings. On April 7, 2011, William Magwood, president of the Ellentown facility, stated that many safety issues had already been addressed and the facility does intend to comply.
We at Markhoff & Mittman, P.C. extend our condolences to the family and friends of Leland Young. Our hearts go out to everyone involved or injured in this terrifying incident.
