Physical Therapy Bills Increase, Workers' Comp Payments Don't

Posted on Jul 15, 2010

Physical therapy and workers' compensation often go hand in hand as part of a more comprehensive plan to help employees return to their former physical abilities. Too bad the New York state legislature doesn't see it that way.

Some did. After all, a bill sponsored by two Democrats would have increased payments above levels last set in 1996. It also would have enabled workers to see a physical therapist first for a clear injury, rather than have to see their doctor first.

Of course, as can often happen in legislation, those two provisions didn't make it through to the bill's passage. Instead, the New York State Workers' Compensation Board will meet with physical therapists every year. Workers still have to get authorization from their doctor and a prescription.

While you may find it difficult to obtain physical therapy at first, the records can be a key part of future cases and establish medical conditions for the board. It's one of our five options for proper medical advice at a social security disability hearing.

Cases that require physical therapy can include conditions like repetitive stress injuries, too. If you want help navigating the workers' compensation process and how to establish need for services like physical therapy, contact a law firm like Markhoff & Mittman, P.C., today.
