Police Investigation Leads To The Arrest Of More Fraudsters

Police in New York have been very busy recently tracking down fraudsters taking advantage of the workers' compensation system. In a recent news article appearing on InsuranceJournal.com, reports of yet another police sting in the Empire state suggest fraud continues to be a problem. This comes as no surprise to insurance companies and others responsible for enforcing workers' compensation laws.

A press release from the New York State Insurance Department provides detailed information regarding the arrest of 13 people from 8 different counties. The main offense appears to be individuals who collected workers' compensation benefits while working jobs on the side. Here is a break-down as stated in the press release:

Arrests in Albany County- Hopewell man collects $7,900 in benefits for an injury, while performing the same work duties for another employer. Watervliet woman collected benefits after claiming she could not walk without assistance; the investigation uncovered she was in face able to walk unaided. Ashland man worked as home health aide while allegedly collecting $8,500 in workers' compensation benefits.

Arrest in Broome County- Binghamton man collected temporary total disability benefits while working on the side doing excavation work and selling household items, gold and jewelery.

Arrest in Chemung County- Elmira bartender who twice claimed he was unable to work due to an injury on the job.

Arrest in Clinton County- Former state corrections officer from Saranac, accused of working while collecting benefits for a job related injury.

Arrest in Fulton County- St. Johnsville man claims an injury prevents him from working, yet he is accused of being employed as a drywall installer.

Arrest in Monroe County- Webster man caught on camera working for a landscaping business while collecting benefits.

Arrest in Schenectady County- Schenectady man claiming a neck injury prevented a return to work, recorded on video performing odd jobs to include installing counter-tops and fence work.

Arrest in Steuben County- Wayland woman collected $10,000 in benefits while owning and operating a ceramic supply store.

In addition to the arrests noted above, the investigation also lead to the arrest of Albany woman who claimed to receive home health care from her son and another individual. When the care however could not have been received as the son was imprisoned and the other actor working at a nursing home at the time.
