Postmarks and Other Ways Workers' Compensation Fraud is Found

Posted on Jul 07, 2010

Workers' compensation fraud investigators have had access for many years to computer networks and other means of investigating potentially invalid complaints that make workers pay more for their coverage. But sometimes, all it takes is a keen eye.

Kenneth Bullock of St. Regis was allegedly injured
from an accident in the early 1990s that he said left him unable to work, but investigators found that may have not been the case. They took a look at the envelopes that he had used to mail in his claims for payments.

New York Workers' Compensation fraud investigators noticed that they had all come from Florida. Further surveillance found that Bullock was living and working
in the Sunshine State while still collecting $39,000 in payments. He could face up to seven years.

When you think about it, it's the simple things that can trip up a less-than-honest worker, but it can be a problem for honest and quiet workers, too. If you know someone who is pulling a scheme like Bullock may have, you could be on the hook as an accomplice.

More importantly, you're cutting into your own funds in New York, where benefits are paid out from a pool of funds. You even have to look out for the people who are supposed to help you
with your case.

When even doctors can be in on defrauding the system
it pays to have attorneys on your side who can spot fraud a mile away.  If you have questions about your situation, contact Markhoff & Mittman's workers' comp attorneys for a FREE consultation
