The American Cancer Society (ACS) released a new set of guidelines for early detection of prostate cancer, stating that in many cases the risks involved in testing and treating potential cancer may not make it worthwhile.
During the two decades that early detection tests for prostate cancer have been available, the death rate associated with prostate cancer has dropped. However, we do not have definitive evidence to show whether early screening was responsible for the drop in the death rate - perhaps it was due to improved treatments.
One thing was certain - talk to your doctor before making the decision not to undergo screening for the disease. As with many medical conditions, each situation is unique based on your medical history and current health status.
