Queens Senator Blasts Workers' Comp Board for Digital Audio Recording

Posted on Feb 12, 2010

As reported in the Queens Gazette, State Senator George Onorato argued plans to automatically record some workers’ compensation hearings instead of using stenographers.  His position - recording equipment is not authorized by current law and unless the law is changed, the Workers Comp Board doesn't have legal authority to replace stenographers with recording equipment.  In this age of computers and technology replacing individuals and changing roles in the workplace, many attorneys for employers, insurance carriers and injured workers are objecting to the use of recording equipment because of issues with malfunctions in the equipment which has led to mistrials in courts in other states who've made the switch away from stenographers.
