Safety Standards Violated - OSHA Fines Brooklyn Contractor

Posted on Jun 03, 2010

OSHA continues its work to be sure employers provide safe workplaces for their employees.  Recently, they fined a contractor in Brooklyn over $125,000. after an investigation due to a partial building collapse.  The company facing the allegations is New York Plank Services - a concrete installation contractor.

In this situation, after the partial collapse, the OSHA inspection found that the structural steel beam that supported planks and stairs had not been bolted and welded properly and therefore did not provide the appropriate stability.  Fortunately, the collapse just affected the building and there were not any injured workers - it could have been devastating!  After hearing about the fines and the cause of the collapse, workers were horrified to find they they'd been working under such unsafe conditions.  It is important for workers to be aware of their OSHA workplace rights so that if they hear or see any potential safety harzards in their work environment they are comfortable bringing them up to management.

The inspection also revealed that employees had not been trained to recognize fall hazards, had not been trained to use some of the equipment correctly and they had not completed the appropriate recording required of occupational illness and injuries.
