As a part of the economic recovery package, senior citizens and retires receiving Social Security and Supplemental Income (SSI) benefits will each receive a $250 check from Uncle Sam. Starting in early May of 2009, checks will be sent to all eligible individuals.
This is a one-time payment provide for in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. In order for individuals to receive payments, they must have been eligible for SS or SSI during November ’08, December ’08, or January ’09.
Individuals who meet the eligibility requirements for payment do not need to take any action in order to receive their check. The money will be sent separately from the individual’s regular monthly payment.
Payment will also be made to individuals who receive benefits from Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB). However, individuals who receive benefits from multiple agencies will not receive multiple checks; each individual is limited to one $250 payout.
