A report released earlier this month by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) states that home fires involving heating equipment such as space heaters are the second leading cause of home fire deaths. The NFPA is sending out this reminder as half of all home heating fires occur in December, January and February.
50% of fires caused by space heaters occur because something flammable was too close to the heater. Flammable materials should be kept at least three feet away from space heaters.
In an effort to generate public awareness, the NFPA offers fire safety tips which focus on heating safety and specifically addresses the use of portable electric space heaters, fuel burning space heaters and wood burning stoves.
