SSA Adds Conditions to It's Compassionate Allowances Program

Posted on Feb 19, 2010

Last week, Michael J. Astrue, Commissioner of Social Security, announced that the Administration will be adding 38 more medical conditions to it's Compassionate Allowances Program. This program allows specific disability claims to be decided in a matter of days, as opposed to months, or sometimes years, if the claimant's medical condition clearly rises to the level of disability.

This is the first expansion of the program since it's inception in October of 2008. The original 50 conditions include terminal illnesses and very serious medical conditions that clearly meet Social Security's definition of "disabled." The new conditions to be added range from adult brain disorders to rare diseases affecting mostly children.
