SSA seeking new home for their data center

Posted on Feb 25, 2009

The Social Security Administration (SSA), currently headquartered in Baltimore County Maryland, needs to find land for its revamped data center.  The move is a result of a $750 million project funded by the recently approved economic stimulus package to modernize SSA’s National Computer Center.

Ideally the new location would be within 40 miles of the Baltimore County location to prevent any problems with data linkages or security.  The move could bring 5,000 to 6,000 jobs to the area, something Maryland officials are excited about given the current economic climate.

Retooling the 30 year old National Computer Center is no easy task, as the center currently houses records for the 56 million people who receive some kind of benefit from the SSA.  The new center is needed because the current data center is expected to run out of storage capacity by 2012.

No word on how quickly the new center will come on-line, but 2012 is not far away so there is a lot to accomplish between now and then.
