A Staten Island construction worker was killed last week in what police are calling a tragic accident. The worker, Jody Reese, 53, from Tottenville was on the job at a construction site on Richmond Avenue near Rockland Avenue in New Springville.
According to police, Reese was standing behind a 10 wheel Mack truck, but was not visible in either of the truck’s side mirrors. The driver of the truck, a co-worker of Reese’s, backed over Reese without realizing what had happened. Reese was knocked down and then crushed by both the rear and front tires of the truck,
Emergency responders arrived at the scene of the accident and attempted to revive Reese before he was transported to Staten Island University Hospital. He was pronounced dead when he arrived at the hospital.
Southbound lanes of Richmond Avenue were closed during the accident investigation, backing up traffic. A similar accident happened last year when a construction worker was backed over by a Caterpillar front-end loader.
Reese’s family members may be eligible to receive workers’ compensation death benefits since Reese was killed on-the-job.
