Triangle Shirtwaist Memorial Scholarships Going Strong 10 Years Later

Posted on Mar 29, 2011

It has been one hundred years since the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, one of the most brutal workplace disasters to happen in the city until the tragedies surrounding 9/11 came to pass. Out of the crisis of the deadly factory fire originated some good that still lives on today.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire Memorial Scholarship was founded to help provide financial assistance to children of workers who were either injured or killed while working on the job. In just ten short years, the Memorial fund has granted $264,000 in scholarships towards education, with some 23 awarded during the 2010-11 school year alone.

Brian Mittman, the managing partner of Markoff & Mittman is also the Director of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire Memorial. The proactive measures the fund takes to help assist families where on-the-job injuries and fatalities have caused emotional and financial strains have helped send many children through college they may not have otherwise been able to afford. Eligibility requirements for the scholarships include the child's parents need to be residing in New York and receiving disability benefits. The child must also be in good standing academically.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire occurred on March 25, 1911 and took the lives of 146 workers who were killed in the fire or died after jumping in an effort to escape. Many of those lost were new immigrants to America. The legacy of the fire has carried on and there was a fundraising dinner celebrated on the 100 anniversary date where Markoff & Mittman partner Daniel Elias performed with his band in support of raising money to continue on with the memorial scholarships.
