Utica carpenter arrested for workers’ comp fraud

A man who received New York workers’ comp benefits from January to July 2008 has been arrested by Utica police. The man, Frederick J. Heinig, has been charged with insurance fraud, perjury, falsifying business records and violating the NY workers’ comp laws.

Heinig applied for workers’ comp benefits claiming that he could not work because of an injury he sustained on the job. However surveillance by investigators showed Heinig performing work as a carpenter at the same time as he was receiving workers’ comp benefits.

According to the New York State Insurance Department, a total of $10,200 in wage replacement benefits was collected by Heinig. If convicted of the charges before him he could face up to four years in prison.

The Insurance Department’s Fraud Bureau, the Office of the Fraud Inspector General of the New York State Workers' Compensation Broad and the New York State Insurance Fund all contributed to the investigation.

Heinig will face a hearing in Oneida County Court.
