OSHA fines Tonawanda Coke Corporation with 14 citations totalling close to $50,000. The company was given 15 days to attest the citations. In this particular situation, an inspection of the Tonawanda Coke Corporation found numerous violations of workplace health and safety conditions. The unsafe worker conditions were widespread - among other things, it appeared workers didn't have adequate training on the machinery and equipment they were operating and were not wearing protective clothing. It was also apparent that management did not monitor and perform medical evaluations as required for those workers exposed to fumes coming out of the coke ovens.

The Tonawanda Coke Corporation, located in Tonawanda, NY, produces foundry coke, a coal byproduct. The company has been around over 90 years; coke ovens were first put into service at this facility in 1917.
