Workplace Safety The Issue for Dozens of New York Firms

Posted on Jul 13, 2010

Some 64 firms in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties have been put on notice by the regional Occupational Safety and Health Administration office that they are not doing right by workers in terms of practices or safety measures.

In a letter addressed to the heads of each company, OSHA officials noted that workplace injuries at each location were happening at a rate above the national average
but there are no penalties or inspections linked to the letters. The Journal News notes that two companies have received notices each year for six years.

One of the biggest issues that we have seen is workplace injuries coming from a lack of safety training
It makes sense to keep workers safe, especially because the rules don't change all that frequently.

So maybe $2.75 million in grant money for updated health and safety training procedures will be a good thing for New York workers in high risk industries like construction or manufacturing. After all, the federal Department of Labor understands
that there is no better price to companies than free.

If your boss isn't taking advantage, it can be difficult to remember all the steps you can take on your own with the hot temperatures and the difficulty in staying hydrated. It's why we put together a list of tips
for construction workers that they can print out and jam in their work jeans.

But if that's not enough and you still find yourself the victim of a workplace accident this summer, consider the team of Markoff & Mittman to help you navigate through the legal process.
