Disability Benefits—Supplemental Security Income

Not everyone has worked long enough to be able to qualify them to receive Social Security disability benefits. So, the federal government has another program—called the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program—that provides disability payments on the basis of need.

Both children and adults who are disabled or blind and adults who are 65 or older are eligible to receive SSI disability benefits. SSI benefits are for those who have limited income and assets. In some cases, a person may qualify to receive both Social Security disability benefits and SSI.

Markhoff & Mittman: Proven Experience, Successful Outcomes

If you are applying for SSI, be aware that the government makes the process difficult. The bureaucrats and doctors reviewing your case rely on thousands of pages of statutes, administrative rules, legal rules, and case law. It is easy for them to make an error in applying the law to your case and to wrongly deny your claim. Additionally, the way your case is presented can often matter as much as or more than the extent of your disability. That’s why a lawyer can make a difference in whether you win or lose your claim. Also, even if you become eligible, you may need to pay back monies that you have received under other welfare and public assistance programs.

Every day, the lawyers at Markhoff and Mittman work at gathering medical evidence and constructing case files that will withstand the scrutiny of multiple layers of review. As one of the oldest disability law firms in New York, we have the practical experience and proven expertise to fight for your benefits. We have been doing this for a long time, and we are good at it.

When you work with Markhoff & Mittman, you can expect the following help:

We will develop full support for your claim by obtaining necessary medical records and information from your doctors.

  • We will obtain all the necessary information from your existing Social Security file.
  • We will advise you on responding to questions from the Social Security Administration or requests for additional information or examinations.
  • We will advise you how to prepare for and handle interviews, conferences or hearings related to your claim, and in many cases accompany or assist you.
  • We will file for a reconsideration, a hearing, or an appeal to the Social Security Appeals Court if you are not satisfied with the outcome of your claim at any stage.

Remember: Benefits are often denied to people who have legitimate SSI claims. Don’t take “no” for an answer without first talking to Markhoff & Mittman toll-free at 866-205-2415 or 914-946-1452.
