What is the meniscus and why do I need knee surgery (Part I)
The Meniscus Tear - Knee Injuries and symptoms
Like most people, when you hear that someone is having knee surgery, you may immediately ask "was it your meniscus"! Yet most people do not really know what the meniscus is, and why it is so important to the proper functioning of the knee and the leg. Meniscus injuries can severely hamper a persons ability to play sports, work, climb, bend, lift, drive, walk, run, and on and on.
The video associated with this information is simple and clear and describes what the meniscus is, and why it is important. If you have had a work related injury (workers compensation) or have developed a sports injury, or have just kind of worn out the old joint (and now may be claiming disability, social security disability or even retirement) then knowing what is going on, what your doctor is talking about and what can be done is incredibly important. This is not medical advice and no substitute for speaking to a medical professional, but just like hiring an attorney, you should ask questions first and be fully informed before making a decision regarding surgery.
The Meniscus
Simply put, the meniscus is a half-moon shaped (one on each side) cartilage that sits between the upper leg bone (femur) and the lower leg bone (tibia). This cartilage helps to cushion the bones and acts as a shock absorber. It also helps the knee to bend and move properly.. Therefore, it is obvious that injuring this part of your body could have significant consequences, such as limiting your ability to work, walk and bend.
Some Common Symptoms of a Meniscus Tear
You may experience the following symptoms that you should tell your doctor:
swelling around the knee
restricted motion
pain
inability to stand on the effected leg
clicking or locking in the knee
